Honkers sweep doubleheader from Wisconsin

Filed under: Sports — Breaking News @ 6:50 pm

The Rochester Honkers made a long, hot day at Mayo Field worthwhile with a handful of long balls against the Wisconsin Woodchucks. Rochester crushed five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Woodchucks, with two in a 10-3 win in the first seven-inning game, and three more in a come-from-behind 8-6 win in 10 innings in the second.

The Honkers (14-9) won their third straight and moved closer to the top of the Northwoods League North Division, pulling within two games of the idle Mankato MoonDogs (16-9) with nine games left in the first half of the 68-game regular season.

Rochester used the home runs to dramatic effect in the nightcap, and to the delight of what remained of a crowd of 1,025 on a sticky 95-degree day. The Honkers trailed 6-3 and were down to their final out with noboby on base in the top of the seventh when they rallied for three runs to tie the score and force extra innings.
