House approves $2B more for ‘cash for clunkers’

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House voted overwhelmingly Friday to rush $2 billion into the popular but financially strapped “cash for clunkers” car purchase program, heeding calls from consumers eager to keep taking advantage of thousands of dollars in trade-in incentives.

Federal approval process threatens 65th Street N.W. interchange

A federal approval process is a “looming monster” that threatens the eventual construction of a desired highway interchange on U.S. 52 at 65th Street in northwest Rochester, a city leader told a group of area businessmen today. “This is my least favorite subject,” said city Public Works Director Richard Freese. He was speaking to a group of about 80 people at the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Cruising with Local Leaders” event at Treasure Island Casino, near Red Wing.

Rochester Patriots win twice at state Legion baseball tourney

The Rochester Patriots won both their games today at the state American Legion, Division 2, baseball tournament by scores of 8-1. They beat Waite Park and Eagan. The tournament continues with rounds on Friday and Saturday, and the finals on Sunday.

Thunderstorms likely Friday night

The National Weather Service forecast as of Thursday evening calls for patchy fog before 9 a.m. Friday, and then there’s a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening.

The weekend looks relatively tame, though there’s a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday night. Sunday is supposed to be sunny, with a high near 78 degrees.

Suspect in St. Peter funeral home fire escapes

Police are searching for an escaped jail inmate accused of starting a St. James funeral home on fire when he crashed a car into it earlier this month. Watonwan (WAH’-tuhn-wahn) County Sheriff Gary Menssen says 22-year-old Josue Sosa escaped at 2:50 p.m. today when he scaled a recreation area fence at the jail. Authorities believe Sosa ran to his brother’s home nearby. They also believe he has since discarded his jail clothes. Sosa is Hispanic, 5-foot-4, about 120 pounds with brown eyes, black hair and a tattoo on his neck. He has an alias of Walter Rodriguez and may have the nickname of Crazy Legs.

Vikings’ Udeze retires, ends comeback from leukemia

Kenechi Udeze’s comeback from leukemia served as an inspiration to his Minnesota Vikings teammates. The announcement of his retirement will not diminish that. Udeze retired today, saying his leukemia is still in remission, but the side effects from the treatments for the disease were making it too difficult to continue the rigors of life in the NFL.

“I would like to thank the Wilf family and the Minnesota Vikings organization for their support,” Udeze said in a prepared statement. “I would also like to thank my fans, friends and family for supporting me through everything. Last but not least, I would like to thank all of the medical professionals and staff in Minnesota who worked tirelessly to give me a second chance at life. God bless.” Minnesota’s first-round draft pick in 2004, Udeze was a starter for four years and tied for the team lead with five sacks in 2007. In his career, Udeze played 51 games, with 11 sacks and 117 total tackles.

Harvard prof hopes episode leads to ‘education, not recrimination’

The Harvard professor whose arrest touched off a national dispute over race and police conduct says he is hopeful that the experience will prove to be an “occasion for education, not recrimination.” Henry Louis Gates Jr. released a statement after his much-anticipated White House meeting with Sgt. FBI targets fallen auto dealer Denny Hecker

FBI agents searched the headquarters of former Twin Cities auto magnate Denny Hecker today. Hecker’s attorney says investigators called him in the morning to tell him they had three search warrants for Hecker’s office in St. Louis Park. The search warrant says federal authorities were looking for evidence of bankruptcy fraud, conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

Crash reported in northwest Rochester
