Rochester Community and Technical College is returning to the junior college state championship game in football.
The unbeaten Yellowjackets (9-0) rallied past Mesabi Range 21-6 on Saturday in the semifinals of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference playoffs. The Yellowjackets will play in the state championship game next Sunday at St. Cloud State. Last season the Yellowjackets missed qualifying for the state playoffs on a tiebreaker, snapping a 11-year streak of reaching the state finals.
“It feels great,” RCTC linebacker Chris Magladina said. “Last year we didn’t get to play (in the playoffs). We have a lot of team togetherness, something we didn’t have last year.”
Kasson-Mantorville senior Drew Wohlfiel’s emergency start at running back resulted in a huge performance Saturday morning at Rochester Community and Technical College.
Wohlfiel, a converted receiver starting because the KoMets’ top three running backs were hurt, took his first carry 76 yards for a touchdown.
He finished with 200 yards and two scores on 21 carries.
That success helped top-seeded K-M end Rochester Lourdes’ 10-game winning streak in Section One, Class AAA with a 31-14 victory.
Turnout for the shots is lower than organizers anticipated. There is a reminder that young children, and all children with underlying health conditions, including those who are uninsured or underinsured, may receive a free flu shot until 1 p.m. Saturday at Heintz Center.

The Minnesota State Patrol is trying to locate a minivan involved in a crash that killed a pedestrian on Interstate 94 in Clearwater. The patrol says a man ran into traffic Thursday night and hit the side of a semi-truck that had swerved to avoid him. The man was knocked down by the semi, then run over by another vehicle that left. The victim died at the scene.
The other vehicle is described as a silver 2001-2004 Dodge Caravan. The patrol says the Dodge likely has previous front-end damage, since duct tape from the vehicle’s bumper was found at the crash. State Patrol Capt. Matt Langer says it’s possible the driver of the Dodge didn’t see a person or know that he or she had hit someone.
A judge ordered Anna Nicole Smith’s boyfriend and two doctors to stand trial on charges of illegally funneling prescription drugs to the former Playboy model. The ruling today followed a three-week preliminary hearing to determine if there was enough evidence to try lawyer Howard K. Stern, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich. The charges included providing drugs to an addict. All three pleaded not guilty.
Olmsted Medical Center will be restricting visits to hospitalized patients starting Sunday (Nov. 1), and continuing through April 30 due to the H1N1 influenza pandemic. Children under 12 will no longer be able to visit, to protect them from H1N1. And visitors will be required to either use hand sanitizer or thoroughly wash their hands before — and after — they enter a patient’s room. Visitors will be screened for flu-like symptoms. If they have symptoms, they will be asked to leave the building. Only the father (or another support person) and grandparents will be allowed to visit any BirthCenter patient.

The lawsuit filed in Ramsey County District Court names the Republican governor and three of his cabinet members. It seeks class-action status for everyone who will lose state aid for medically prescribed diets or get smaller property tax refunds for renters.
