WINONA — DFL delegates of Minnesota’s first congressional district unanimously endorsed three-term congressman Tim Walz today as part of their district convention in Winona. The endorsement sets the stage for the November elections, where, as in 2010, Walz will face concentrated opposition from the GOP.
“I think I am certainly targeted,” says Walz, “because they know that I am resonating.”
Walz’s response to that pressure is to rely on a time-tested strategy, “I always run like I’m ten points down,” he says, “We’ll just continue on. I think, if anything, I’ve always run the biggest grassroots campaign that’s ever been run in Southern Minnesota. We are now better at it.”
During his acceptance speech, Walz was interrupted three times by standing ovations from the enthusiastic assembly of delegates.
“We should all be so proud that Tim Walz is our congressman,” says Kimberly Edson, a delegate from Rochester, “He has done amazing things in support of veterans and in support of health care. He represents every person in the district. I think he is somebody that we can all rally behind.”
