  • School Board: Incumbents might choose sidelines instead of re-election

In light of the botched election due to the primary oversight, maybe the 3 members not up for re-election could do the right thing and step down and have all 7 seats elected? Can’t cost any more to have 7 races vs. 5 on a ballot.

  • Cigarette Butt Tax would make smokers responsible for habit

After reading this letter, I am wondering if the Democrats could figure a way to tax stupidity?  Eugene would of course object to such a tax.

Is Eugene suggesting placing a tax on the purchase of pets to make them responsible for picking up their do-do?

Maybe Eugene is using the comparison to a pet that if a smoker litters, fine that person for littering?

How could it be “legal” to fine a person for littering in advance at the time of purchasing a product?

  • Editorial: Would deposit law clean up Minnesota?

Susie:  I would take a pot shot at Republicans too if their solution to a non-issue was to raise taxes, create an enormous logistical nightmare and create unintended results in the process.

Along those lines, how about you pay $20 deposit when you buy a TV.  Instead of having to pay $20 to get rid of the TV when it is broken junk, you would actually get $20 back when you take it in?  Same with any/all items that are truly hazardous when improperly disposed.

So just thinking out loud here.  My household recycles EVERYTHING. So I would pay $2.40 more for my case of Diet soda.  I already pay Waste Management $30/month to pick up those Diet Soda cans.  Now I will have to pay about $40/month, and that’s just looking at the soda consumption in our house?

OR, I warehouse all the cans, then drive them to a deposit return station.  They count out how many cans I am returning.  I suppose I have to cross reference that with my count.  Then somebody has to give my money back to me?

Who is going to hold that $2.40 until I return the cans?  And how much will it cost to create the system to give my $2.40 back to me?  And how does this impact Waste Management, now that they won’t be getting my aluminum cans to resell?

Talk about fixing something that ain’t broke.
