  • Big changes in deer hunting rules to be discussed at meetings

I’m not trying to tell anybody not to take their child deer hunting.  There already are deer seasons in place and youth hunters have been hunting them for decades.  The only change proposed here is that the grouse hunters are losing out on one of the best weekends after the leaves are down before the rifle hunters show up.

  • Big changes in deer hunting rules to be discussed at meetings

I think there is also a proposal in place to allow a youth firearms deer hunt over MEA weekend state wide.  I’m all for creating opportunities for youth to hunt but this is a bad idea. I already take my daughter grouse hunting on MEA weekend along with many other people on public land in northern MN.  Rifle deer hunters, grouse hunters, and bow hunters in camo are not a good mix.

  • DNR says it can neither confirm nor deny cougar attacked horses

The DNR is looking more and more foolish with their “can neither confirm nor deny” line.  There are cougars in the state and they are starting to be a problem.  One attacked an killed a horse in Ely, one was hit by a car in Bemidji, one was shot near Savage, and eye witness accounts are too numerous to mention.  When is it going to be a person that’s attacked?  I’ll bet not too far in the future.

  • Alaska: Wolf, bear hunts increasing moose, caribou

I think this article should be forwarded to the MN DNR.  Their solution to a declining MN moose population is to kill more deer in Northern MN.  This years bear harvest is exceeding all expectations and wolves are thick in Northern, MN.  Maybe it’s time for some honesty about the true MN wolf population and the impact on other wildlife (and pets).

  • Big bucks are nice, but let's not get carried away

This whole article depends on what side of the land owner fence you sit on.  Land owners have the luxury of sitting back and waiting for the big buck.  Public land hunters will shoot any legal deer. To me it seems like the real issue is declining access.  I don’t understand why the landowners can’t self govern for big antlers, or whatever their motives are, and manage public land for quantity.  If hunter recruitment isn’t promoted, and it can’t happen without access, the anti’s will shut hunting down completely.
