  • Rescued pit bull is now a therapy dog

My two pit bulls, both confirmed cream puffs, say, you go, Hector!! Good job! Soaking up love and spreading it are what the true pit bull personality is about.

  • Video: Dog from Vick fighting ring comes to Rochester

To the poster who asked why all the out-of-state responses: we love our dogs and we are sick and tired of them (& us) being attacked because of all the misrepresentation in the media hype & negative sensationalism. Statistics indicate there are more pit bulls in the U.S. now than any other breed. Stats also show that the overwhelming majority of pits are sound, friendly, downright goofy dogs who will never hurt ANYONE. (Except maybe to step on your foot.) Check out the ATTS site & check out how many pits are currently used in law enforcement, search-&-rescue, & therapy; you will be impressed by the numbers. Any dog of any breed, large or small can - & have - killed humans… usually small children, & usually due to the actions of irresponsible HUMANS. So the next time you see Hector or one of our city’s other bobble-headed dogs being walked down the sidewalk, instead of crossing to the other side of the street, open your mind, shed the discrimination, & ask to meet the dog. The kisses & “bully grins” you could receive just might win your heart & change your mind forever.

  • Rochester dog ordinances ignored

First, if your own dogs aren’t licensed, get in compliance with local ordinances before you complain about others. You don’t mention what the “aggressive pitbull” did, specifically, just the “two near attacks.” Loose dogs are an irresponsible owner issue, not breed issue, and you ARE racially profiling, just as if you were targeting Blacks or Hispanics. In answer to your question, responsible people, including some local law enforcement and corrections, own this breed specifically because pit bulls are, by nature, adoring and affectionate with all humans, even those who have badly abused them. They used to be our country’s symbol of loyalty, and many pit bulls today are used as law enforcement, service, and search/rescue dogs. Their “natural disposition” is not to be aggressive, but rather, friendly and clownish. That said, Rochester ordinances prohibit dogs being off-lead in public and it is my experience that Animal Control is responsive to dealing with owners who violate the ordinance, when citizens report them.
